Trailer analysis

Wow, so I’ve blown up your inbox with all my posts, and I guess we’ve all seen it like; fifty thousand times now, and have nit-picked it to death. I’ve finally managed to get it onto my YouTube channel and I’m sorry that the downloading link doesn’t work for overseas viewers. Can any Aussies tell me whether it worked for them? Here’s my YouTube link:

Also, I found this. It’s not official but beautiful nevertheless:

Okay, so, here’s what I think; negatives first: Dakota, though beautiful, has an edginess to her that doesn’t sit well for me with the wide-eyed innocence I always pictured Ana to have. She seems worldly to me, playing at coy rather than being so naturally. I would have preferred a more wholesome, girl-next-door look for her. Jamie on, the other hand, I feel is too cute. That pretty-boy face doesn’t have the depth of character of a man who’s been through hell and back as Christian has, but I might just be persuaded to forget all about that when he parades around in those low-slung jeans 😉 For me; I wanted to see a darker, more rugged Christian.

Having said that, I’m absolutely thrilled with EL James involvement in the movie; that she didn’t just sell the rights and left it there. I LOVED that what I saw in the trailer was an accurate representation of the book and those deliciously seductive lines that CG delivers so smoothly. I cannot wait for him to say, “Keep still,” or “Come for me.” Lastly, I can easily overlook my concern about the actors provided the movie is true to their all-consuming chemistry and that love that just blindsided them. In short, I want to see the SPARKS fly between them, not just sexually, but the way their fragile love CONSUMED them, even when doing the plainest things and I think the trailer delivers a hint of that. Overall I’m much happier than I thought I’d be. I’m honestly excited for the movie.

I say, roll on February! 😉

Oh I have no doubt that they will. The money this will generate is going to be astounding! And considering that it’s a relatively small budget movie compared to an action/alien/fantasy movie, they’ll be laughing all the way!

Fair comments on the whole but I think you may be surprised at the intensity that Jamie. Dornan can portray and fully expect that in the film. He has played some VERY dark characters in other roles. Also CG is described often as pretty in the books!! 🙂

Overall I really liked the trailer, I agree that it appears to includes some of the iconic scenes. I sorta disagree about ur view of Christian – I always saw him a ‘breath taking handsome’ aka pretty boy, with all his angst hidden behind the ‘stormy eyes’ . One thing I wished – Ana whispered ‘Christian’ as the elevator doors closed – maybe its in the movie !!!! All this aside I can’t wait for the movie 🙂

I loved the trailer. I agree with Sandi’s view of Christian. I think Jaime is handsome, intense and intimidating. I love the way he can express himself with his body language- eyes and posture. Dakota is pretty, innocent and demure. I can’t wait til she blosooms into our beautiful Ana. I did imagine her hair a bit darker. The interview- I think they need coaching before doing any other interviews.

I loved the trailer, however, they are not sticking entirely to the book, these are only 3 things I noticed: 1.- when Christian asks about her, when she says “just look at me” and the replies “I am” … That’s not in the book, is it?? I just re-read the interview and it’s not there…. 2.- her dress, in the book it says like 10 times she’s wearing Kate’s “plum” dress when she is dancing and when she meets the Greys for dinner, the dress on the trailer is not plum unless I’m color blind…. 3.- the kiss in the elevator, it is when she spends the 1st night with Christian after he rescues her from Jose, Taylor bought her a blue shirt, she is not wearing blue, again, I might be color blind…….. Anyways, these 3 observations as inconsequential to the wonderful trailer we were presented…. I was hoping to see a little lip biting… Oh well..

You’re right on all points but I think expecting the movie to be exactly like the book is a high ideal. The screenplay adaptation will always have changes but I think, overall, I could follow it very well. like you, I could identify the scenes from the book which put my mind at ease. Yes, it was great and sooooo exciting! 😉

LOL I was looking at C dancing … don’t recall EL ever describing him as wearing anything brown – only blacks and grays. And in the interview one of the most intense part was him helping her with her coat before stepping into the elevator. Pretty funny to kit-pic all the little details – but we have read these enough to catch the differences 🙂

Oh absolutely. I think the producers know that we’re looking at everything under a magnifying glass. I’ve personally read the books 8 times, back to back, the full series every time, and of course I’ve created a whole other world for our two lovebirds so they have a tough audience to please. Add to that the deeply personal construct each one of us have in our own minds about the book and characters and you have a very hard sell. Here’s hoping we’ll be blown away! 😉

Monique thank for your sharing all these links with us ladies. You have a beautiful soul and it is evident with your actions and In your writing. I also felt that Jamie and Dakota lacked that special something although I can accept Jamie as Christian but still not happy with Dakota as Ana. I wanted “more”. I agree with Yuls on the differences in the trailer but I can only assume the producers changed things for a reason. I can only hope that they stay true to the spirit and essence of the books that we fell in love with and have the actors portray their characters and their incredible love story as how we read it because it is an incredible and passionate love that they share and Ana’s journey in discovering her sexual awaking and Christian’s journey to confront and eliminate his demons. I will go to see the movie with an open mind and hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised and satisfied. Thanks again Monique for all the time you have given to us and sharing your own incredible story. Enjoy your weekend. Look forward to reading one of your own books one day. Take care lovely lady and please let us know of any other posts re your writing, and of course fifty shades xx

Thank you for your kind words, Carmela. It’s a wonderful gift to work for appreciative readers. Yes, I would imagine that all the internal dialogue we see in the book will have to be acted out in some way on the movie. In the first scene, there in his office where she says “…look at me,” then she makes a little sound of derision; it shows us her low self esteem which was shown to us in her mind mostly during the book. We will have to accept adaptations like that. Like you, I’m keeping an open mind and hoping to be surprised 😉 Hope you’ve had a good week, and again, thank you!

Monique, I agree with you 100 percent. I know the movie will do well in spite of the actors…and while I’m sure they are both fine actors, I don’t see them in these parts. She’s not innocent enough and he’s not my Christian…MY Christian is darker, less “boyish” and more of a man, and to nit pick, Jamie’s hair is all wrong. But, he’s cute, and I know the movie will turn me on just like the books did. What I’ll miss is the depth and the intensity of the psychodrama that unfolds in the books. That’s OK, I’ve read them 9 times and can read them as many more times as I choose. Thanks so much for all you give to us.

LOL! You beat me by one, Franne! I’m on 8 times! Yes, no doubt it will be a box office hit and if you look at the stats of the viewing of the trailer I think we’re in for a STORM of ticket sales. Though it would be wonderful if the actors worked for me, I can still enjoy the movie IF it represents the book accurately so I’m hoping… You are so welcome and thank you for seeing the effort that goes into maintaining the blog 😉

Again, thank you for the countdown, Monique. The last few days have been great fun. I’m exactly on the same page as you are regarding Dakota. I am much happier with Jamie, though he is not exactly what I hoped for. However, if he keeps wearing those suits that nicely….Well! I think I can be very on board with him. Loved the scene in the trailer where he is posing for the pictures. Total yum! I’m afraid Dakota will distract me from really losing myself in the film, but hope she will surprise me. I’ll keep an open mind. Even so, the trailer exceeded my expectations and I am SO ready for February!
I liked Beyonce’s song overall, but didn’t like her strange moans at the end. They weren’t sexy to me. I agree with Sandi, Ana whispering, “Christian” before the elevator doors closed would have been perfect to close the trailer.

I agree…and get goosebumps even thinking about…Ana saying “Goodbye Christian” when the elevator doors closed. That would have sent us all into orbit I think. As I said earlier, the books are still hot as fire and we all have them. I think the movie will simply be what it is…an attempt to capture the essence of this story. I hope they have done it justice. We will see. Monique, thank you again!!

I agree. She seems too old to play Ana. I feel like they were forcing the characters and not embodying the characters.  He seems way too young to play Christian.  He’s cute and all but Jesus he’s a baby. There’s nothing mysterious, dark ,dangerous or Dominant about him. There was no chemistry between them. It seems forced.  I wanted that Trailer to make Gasp. And say OMG OMG OVER AND OVER AGAIN.  It didn’t do that for me. I’m VERY DISAPPOINTED.  UGH! I REALLY HOPE THE MOVIE IS BETTER THAN THE TRAILER.

I agree with your analysis but I was also disappointed that the plum dress that we hear so much about in the book is peach!
It will be very interesting to see how many of us are happy come February, and also it will be interesting to see what classification they give it.

Oh Katherine, you have NO idea how accurately you paint that picture! Too funny! Yes, originally I got permission from Universal to post the video on my own YouTube channel but the copy they sent me was protected so I kept trying and failing and eventually the readers were sending me links! Urg! I was tearing my hair out 😛 But is was so much fun doing it with all the fans across all of the globe. Thank you for participating. Yes, I see no reason why the dress was peach and not the plumb one, especially as it was emphasised in the book. As far as the rating is concerned, I;m stunned that they haven’t decided yet! That is going to be interesting! 😉

Hi Monique!!!!! I miss you oh so much!!! ❤ Hugs & ♥ Okay, I have to agree 100% with your 'negative review!' No surprise to me as I totally think the same thing!!
Well now, 'Dakota literally doesn't do it for me, not even 15%!' She only has the eye/hair colors going for her 😦 Very disappointing to say the least. Now the only thing that I can say about Jamie is this, when he looks a certain way, hard to explain, he would maybe be okay as our Christian (as a last resort)! I do not even think his body is what I envisioned…what about you? . But……I do feel that he isn't who I pictured as playing 'Sir!' lol Someone with a chiseled jaw, hard looks that when smiles it doesn't reach his eyes…..
ALSO, did you see the Grey's all sitting at the dinner table together? NO!!!! I do not think them actors are who I envisioned as the Grey's characters!!! Taylor….NO…so sad about the process that the powers to be felt a need to settle for whoever 😦 Well, I could say more, but I don't want to ruin this movie preview for myself…I don;t want to get to negative and have it settle in my mind, lol
I wish that we lived near one another so that we could all go to the movie together!! That would be a blast & I know we'd have to see it at least twice because of our reviews that we would make during the show! Unless, the show blows us all away by surprise?!?!?!
Take care Monique……..Miss your blogs 😦 TTYL

Hi Monique, I’m so glad to hear from you again & have missed your blog. I’ve been off the radar for a while, life & general chaos. Hope to hear more from your blogs soon. I too am excited about the trailer & upcoming movie, however I still feel uneasy about the actors portraying our favorite characters. I feel like a lot of people that while cute in a boyish way Jamie doesn’t quite fit the ‘Christian Grey’ role for ME! The same goes for Dakota, I think she’s very pretty but just doesn’t have the same qualities that for me ‘Ana’ has. (While my personal picks would have been Matt Bomer & Alexis Bleddon. Even though they are both older, they look younger & closer in description. IN MY OPINION!) While both actors are brilliant in their craft I think a role like this should have been as close to the characters as humanly possible. However, in saying all that I still want to see the film and am hoping I will be proven wrong in my reservations. Roll on Feb 2015.

You are right about Dakota and Jamie — she’s not innocent enough and he’s too young. Matt Bomer would have been so perfect! Maybe it’ll all come together better when it’s a continuous film instead of moments stuck together for a trailer.. And Ana really should speak Christan’s name as the elevator door closes.

Hello Marlene 😉 Aw, I’m sorry! At least you have the epilogue to look forward to, right? Yes, the elevator scene, I’ve seen many comments and complaints about that. Maybe it is in the full movie? All in all though, I feel good about it 😉

I think Jamie will be fine…he is suppose to be young looking and old acting. I did think Matt Bomer would be perfect, but that didn’t work out. I do think Jamie’s “coloring” will be right…copper hair etc. I do think he probably will have a “dark side” even though I have never seen him act..others who have said he can pull this off.

Dakota is all wrong no matter how you slice it. Her hair is AWFUL and can I say this again AWFUL, I pictured LUSH long DARK hair..not some hair style that looks FRIZZED and with bangs…really? Trying to make her look innocent with BANGS. Not happening. I agree she looks coy…not innocent.

I do not like that the wardrobe is way off target. These are important parts of the whole thing. CG did not wear a suit for the photo shoot. She did wear a PLUM dress to their meeting at the hotel and with his parents.

She did wear the blouse from Taylor’s shopping trip in the elevator.

In his office, I didn’t see the display of the 36 pieces of artwork that she said “taking the ordinary to the extraordinary”…that was a huge piece of the interview…and he couldn’t agree more..as I recall.

I did not like that she and he didn’t address each other with first names when she left GEH…and in the elevator for the HOT kiss…where was the “FUCK the paperwork” before the kiss……

SO unless this is not an actual clip of the movie, I think it is safe to say they didn’t follow the script or the descriptions enough.

Like I say I think Jamie will be able to pull it off, but Dakota is innocent enough to be cast. She does not look 21..she looks 33 and worn out.

I’m with you, Jean. She looks pretty haggard for 21. Holding out the hope that it will be a good depiction, but these are not the ideal actors. I still see Matt Bomer and Alexis Bleidel as Ana and Christian in my mind. But, this is what we have. Curious to see if they decide to make films out of the other two books. So much interest here and so many opinions. It’s amazing how attached we all are to these characters.

Wow, Jean, that’s a great comment. Thank you and of course, right on the money. I can understand the script changes where they have to translate her inner thoughts into something that can be portrayed visually so the whole thing makes sense but it was always going to playing to a VERY tough crowd. I’m more optimistic post trailer than I was pre, but I kept my expectations low. We’ll have to see how it pans out in Feb but one thing is for sure, the movie is going to make money, and LOTS of it! Good to hear from you! 😉

Obviously we all have different opinions… We’ll have to agree to disagree. I think Dakota looks good for this part, she is simple, she’s not innocent but she looks so inconsequential like Anastasia, and as for Christian the books describes a very handsome guy, but maybe for E L James, Jamie is very handsome, let’s keep in mind that she wrote this book when when was writing a fan fiction based of the characters from twilight and based on Bella and Edward and if James saw Edward as this handsome domineering guy well, I think Jamie is a better fit than Robert…. I don’t like the changes of the clothing, and dialogue, but I’ll accept it because I can complain all I want but the movie is done and we all are going to watch it…. Let’s just embrace that the characters are not who we wanted them to be but who the writer wanted them to be, and let’s just enjoy it….

I agree with Yuls, Rob would have been AWFUL and Kristen as well. When fans wanted them for the leads, I couldn’t believe it. So for that fact alone, I shouldn’t complain.

And after watching the clip, oh so many times, I will agree with Monique that this could work. I think there is chemistry there and I think Jamie will be able to give a dark side without a problem. We see him at the interview as intrigued not dark. We haven’t seen a scene with him in that situation yet.

I do know that there are some things that HAVE to be in the movie. “Fuck the paperwork” is one of them. I do think not having correct costume design will irritate fans. I am also concerned with the dinner at the hotel, because in pictures I have seen on the internet, she is in a coat…we all know that she doesn’t not have a coat and he gives her his…which is where Kate finds the contract when she confronts C/A on his birthday in book 2. These are important and while we can’t change them we can complain..because to us, this is more than just a movie.

I have re read these books so many times it is crazy (and I never ever re read books). So I do want the movie to at least try to give me the vision that we see in the books.

Having said all that, I am more than excited for this movie and I hope the movie blows me away. No matter what I will see it and probably buy it when it is available…because I can’t get enough of Christian.
