Between the covers book club

Hello there, lovely ladies 🤗

Firstly, let me wish all the mommies a wonderful, blessed Mother’s Day. What a gift it is to be a mom! ❤️

So, how are you this fine weekend? It was another hectic week for me, and what’s more, our temps are slowly inching down. Soon it’ll be all warm woollies and dark mornings. *sigh* 😝

I’ve seen quite a bit of feedback about the Darker DVD. The positive reviews mostly say the same, that the extra 13 minutes apparently bring the MORE we’re all after. I enjoyed reading this Fifty convert story on the Glamour site.

Bustle features an article suggesting that a bonus scene from the film “proves that Elena may be more of a threat to Christian and Ana’s future than we thought.” Huh. Personally, I don’t think this is news. In the books I felt Ana’s icy feelings for the “Bitch-Troll” pretty clearly, the perception of Elena as a threat not something she ever kept to herself. Why does it leave me feeling as though the reporter didn’t actually read the story? Check out the clip:

Then, Katherine shared this, a satirical review twisting the Darker storyline into laughable ridiculousness. If you’re a die-hard movie fan, you’ll need to hold on to your sense of humour for this one, but I almost fell off my chair cracking up!

This week I read:

The Hot Shot by Kristen Callihan, book 4 in the Game On series, was another great read for this unfailing author, but my comment relating to the shoddy editing stands. Where on earth was her editor? Random single words popped up, littering the otherwise flawless text with unwelcome distractions. *Tsk, tsk* 😜

Currently I’m reading:

I’ve put Trophy Wife by Alessandra Torre aside in favour of Sweet Barbarian by Jayla Jasso and Crown of Lies by Pepper Winters, book 1 in the Truth and Lies Duet series, a strong rec and gift from Katherine. #HappyDays

My hubby sent me this meme. It made a laugh!! I’m definitely going to try!! LOL!

Let me know if it works for you! 😂😂

Have a fantastic weekend, girls. See ya’ next week!

Hi Monique, I tried to be offended by the honest trailer but I was in a wrinkle 😂
Unfortunately I didn’t get too much reading done this week hubby was away but finished my Dean Kontz book and made a start on Hundreds by Pepper Winters, so far so good.
Hope you enjoy your first foray in to the world of Ms Winters I’m interested to see what you think.
I don’t understand the meme to be honest don’t even know what a meme is, I’ll have to ask the kids lol
Have a great week everyone x

LOL! The trailer was awesome!! So funny. Luckily, mostly, I don’t take things like that too seriously. Good thing, I think 😉 The meme (simply a picture with words, mostly to make a joke or a point) show that when a spider bites a guy, he turns into Spiderman, when a woman bites her man, he turns domesticated! LOL! Hopefully that theory works… heading off to bite my hubby now…. 😂😂

I’ve been relaxing in the afterglow of My Sweet Barbarian. Very little barbarian about him, unless barbarians are known for being totally adorable. It’s an inexpensive and relaxing read that I lurved!!
The Darker Honest trailer was so funny, and unfortunately mostly on track. Still avoiding the Darker extras….my DVD is supposed to arrive this next week! Ordered on EBay as Target was out.
Right now I’m out of genre, wasn’t ready to fall in love again quite yet. I’m looking over the ridiculous number of books on my iPad… too many to choose from! I seriously think I’ve got more books than I can finish in my lifetime…..and yet….that wicked one-click button taunts me!!!
Happy Mothers Day!! Hope some yummy chocolate found you today!

    • Monique Lain says:

The barbarian is so, so sweet, Sharon 😍 I might even be persuaded to trudge through snow to find one! 😉 Let us know what you think of the DVD once you get yours. LOL! for wicked one-click button. But what would we do without it? 💕

Just finished Bombshell. Sorry to say I was underwhelmed. Sad I have to say that. Enjoyed Shuttergirl which was earlier one with similar characters. Just didn’t feel motivation within the story…. or compulsion to keep turning pages. Trophy Wife is next up. If it’s a bust I’m going to have to go back to…. the ‘source’.
Happy M’s Day. Heard from all three kids. Nothing to complain about

    • Monique Lain says:

Aww, what a pity, Lissa. I enjoyed it. Not quite Songs of Submission, but good. I hear mixed things about Trophy Wife. I’m curious to hear your thoughts. Aww, that’s special, hearing from all your kiddos! Have a good week, girlfriend 🤗

    😎 Hi Hi.
Just finished Sawyers “Sex in the Sticks” and I did really enjoy the cute story. You could see it coming a mile a way but she added in things you couldn’t see coming too. I was laughing out loud so I cannot ask for more entertainment than that. On this, Logan is every bit sexy but it comes out gradually whereas Valentine is your face. In a good way actually. I usually like Sawyer’s reads, albeit some are on the short side…but her male leads make up for it!!

Okay… just watched downloaded Darker. Yes, added scenes made it feel more complete. But the funny trailer made me realize that JD is almost always in his pants when… you know. Weird… really weird. And while pool scene is ‘nice’…. yes, reference acknowledged…. the sex at the end of the scene seemed more yucky than rough as did sex in red room at end. Pool scene needed the ruler and red room scene needed build up…lol.
But….. watched the promo at the end and this time picked up an anomaly. It seems like it’s CG who fires the gun so they might have completely changed the kidnapping arc. Will someone pls check my work?
Started Trophy Wife…. will have to get past the part that she’s a pole dancer. I felt I’d always flip burgers if it were me….
Anyone anticipating Buns…. coming out soon. Her benchmark will always be Wallbanger.
    Toodles….anyone know that reference?

    • Monique Lain says:

Hey Lissa. 🤗 Good to know the DVD seems fuller, and I felt the exact same thing about the lovin’ at the conclusion of the pool scene. Yucky is a good word. There was NO love in any of it. Rough is one thing, object f@cking is an entirely different story. YES! I noticed the shooting thing too and wondered if it was an editing trick. They do that sometimes, splice a trailer so you think something else is happening. Time will tell, I guess. As for Trophy Wife, I can get over the pole, but damn, I have an issue with a writer as eloquent as Torre misusing the word ‘cum’. Eeeeekkkk. My pet peeve! 😝 I loved Wallbanger, but slowly her books have become very cookie cutter, IMO. They’re nice, usually well edited, but nothing like the stellar debut. The only toodles reference that comes to mind is from Micky Mouse!! 😂😂

      • Lissa Jeri says:

Toodles….the Laters Baby of its time…. how Gidget (Sally Field in a part I think she refuses to put on her resume) said goodbye to her boyfriend.

Trophy Wife, FSOG, and others…is it really that easy to rip panties off someone? I’m thinking not, even with…sexpertise

The problem with motivationless, aromantic sex…. doesn’t work, yet there is a raft of it in books and media now. Just finished second season of Girls and I haven’t seen any sex yet that’s believable that the female would get anywhere close to finishing let alone, um, lubricating…. come to think of it that there’s a relationship going on. The sex scenes are…. yucky. It’s like there’s no passion anymore and the sex in Darker reflects this. And there’s a report now that the sex lives of millennials is lacking. Can’t get the reference right now, but google-able. Where are the cart and horse here?

Not up to sex word faux pas in Trophy Wife yet, but will shudder when I get there I’m sure…. did I just pun or double entendre?

        • Monique Lain says:

Whahahaha! Yes! Yes you did! Only you. Love it! 😂😂 As far as all the yucky sex is concerned, personally I think porn is to blame, Lissa. The visual a powerful teaching tools to boys (and later men) who forget that the act is more than just the use of a hole. No skill, no finesse, just blind f@cking. Now, it seems, coupled with the surge in violent bondage blended with these momentary images, it takes objectification to a whole new level and the media is sadly lapping it up! I heard a quote the other day, an anti porn advocate that says: “porn doesn’t show too much, it shows too little.” So true in the context of it simply showing a snapshot within the course of a relationship, not the beautiful path that could lead up to a connection between two people and then, ultimately lead to their bodies connecting. #PornKillsLove 😳 I’ll get off my soapbox now.

          • Lissa Jeri says:

Well, we agree there’s a problem. …just don’t know if your answer or any answer will fully inform. I just look at things from a female perspective. Ana gets turned on in the books. Words , actions, and her voice inform us. Her response and ‘finishing’ is motivated and believable…altho jealous that she’s so ready all the time.😃😃 But Darker the movie ignores all that. And many books also go wham bam thank you ma’am so that a girl can feel kinda inadequate with a side order of jealousy and why not me?. Will continue discussion another day…age old subject I guess.
Just touched down at SEA-TAC and flooded with thoughts and book memories. On highway from opening scene of first book. If only. Instead four days with family….ah well

            • Monique Lain says:

I completely get what you’re saying, and, what’s more, I wholeheartedly agree. I’ve dropped more than one book for that very thing, that empty joining of bodies that, to me, seems only gratifying for the males of our species and sometimes so out if the blue. Funny that women write these hard f@cking scenes, their heroines being ridden without a thought to love or feelings, ever-ready orifices open to anything. The connection should be so much more, so much deeper, and as a woman, I WANT to be seduced. When I read a book, see a movie, that is EXACTLY what I expect from the lovin’. My five cents worth on this potentially exhaustive subject. Enjoy the time with your family, Lissa. 🤗
