Between the covers book club

Dear lovely ladies,

I hope this won’t come as too much of a surprise to you, but I feel it is time to end this chapter of my life. This will be my very last book club post on the blog. So very much has happened since I first put my Fifty thoughts out there, sharing on Fan Fiction in the hopes of finding my feet after my world had tilted on its axis, my views radically shifted because of a book I happened to buy.

Did you know that Meander was born from that moment? I never intended for it to get as big as it did, for garnering so many readers and, eventually friends, from all around the globe. All I meant to do was purge this story that I couldn’t let go, but instead it took me on a helluva’ ride, a journey of self-discovery that’s left me forever altered. I hope you know I was blown away by your overwhelming support as you embraced my story, all the reviews, the feedback, the patient (and sometimes downright impatient 😉) waiting for the next chapter, the mid-week teasers and the speculation, the encouragement and, like I mentioned earlier, the friendship that came along with this blog and the book club.

On the 13th of May, 2012 I posted my first chapter on Fan Fic with no more than a vague notion of saying goodbye. As you already know, that was not to be. 72 chapters later, with almost 400 000 words in Meander alone, a handful of short stories, a blog migration with a steady book club component, and just over 4000 reviews just on FF, saw me to this point in time, a time where I have to accept that all good things must come to an end.

Am I a little sad? Yes, hand on heart, I can say that I feel the sting of goodbye. 😔 From here we forged our own little world, first bound to Christian and Ana, and then later, we found each other in the books that followed. The commitment, love and time that’s gone into cultivating the blog, has been my privilege and I thank you for making it possible, for being there and always being so positive. The vast majority of you are silent readers, and I respect that, but know that I see you in my stats and views. I know you are there, the vocal ones (you know who you are, girls – we all do 😉😂) as well as those of you who choose to simply watch and read from the sidelines. I thank ALL of you for seeing me through.

But it is not all bad news. I’m not going anywhere, after all. I will still be here, the blog will continue hosting Meander if you ever feel the need to spend some time with my version of Christian and Ana. And despite the book club coming to an end, you can still see what I read and how I felt about that story if you follow me on Goodreads. Between the blog, Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter and Co, I’m sure you’ll find a way to get hold of me should the urge ever strike ya.

Now, for the very last time, let’s chat books. Sadly, with another crazy week behind me, I didn’t get to finish anything, but Tripping on a Halo by Alessandra Torre, is proving to have a very interesting premise. Not sure where she is going with this quirky tale, but so far, I’m happy to go along with the trip.

Also, I’m still enjoying A Breath of Snow and Ashes by Diana Gabaldon, book 6 in the Outlander series. As predicted, the sh!t did indeed hit the fan with more drama for my beloved pair. I think I handled it well, though. At least I didn’t have a sleepless night worrying about the characters. Let’s call that progress, eh?

I’m not sure where I’ll be going next, but please find me on Goodreads if you are keen to connect with my reading journeys. Also, it gives me the opportunity to see what books you are falling in love with. Click the link to find my Goodreads handle here.

With that, it’s time for my final farewell. For all the clicks and the likes, for all the reviews and advice, the suggestions, and the feedback, the constructive advice, that likes and the shares, the book suggestions and dissection of the Fifty movie franchise, for the jokes and the videos, the emails and chats, for keeping the blog a happy place despite differing views, for standing up for me when the occasional harsh review appeared, for being your beautiful and very best selves, thank you, lovely ladies. You’ve been nothing short of spectacular. MERRY CHRISTMAS! May 2019 bring you joy like you’ve never known and the peace I know we all want for our precious world.

Ah Monique I actually got shivers reading this. Thank you for all the hard work you’ve put into not only the book club but also into the fabulous Meander.
Good luck in whatever you undertake next, no doubt you will be successful. I’m looking forward to the day we see a book published by you.
Your blog kept me entertained when things weren’t going too well for me, I was always guaranteed a giggle 😂😂
I have made some fabulous friends (you included) through the blog who I have no doubt will be in my life for a long time to come.

Take care ladies and once again thank you Mon, it’s been a pleasure xxx

Oh Katherine, shivers? I have tears, girlfriend. You and your fabulous shenanigans have come ALL the way with me! Literally through thick and thin. I always marvel at how we all connected. Perhaps it’s our age that makes it so wonderful. We didn’t grow up with the tech we have today, so this connecting across borders and countries is not something we take for granted. For me, it’s still like magic. I couldn’t be happier knowing that I brought you a smile. You and all the readers certainly brought that to me in spades. Of all the responses to the mid week teaser, yours was by far the most entertaining! I STILL think back on it fondly. Keep shining, lovely and thank you. 🌹

I was probably one of the impatient readers you spoke about. Many a mini breakdown I had over the midweek teaser usually in the middle of my work day. Everything stopped when your email popped up. The funniest thing for me was the engineers in the office pretending they had no interest in FSOG or Meander but dying to know what was happening next. It’s been a pleasure and a privilege to be on this journey with you 🍀 a little 4 leaf clover for the best of luck in all your endeavours xxx

I appreciate that all good things must end but we have all been friends during the time we have spent in the book club and reading Meander. I was so pleased to read that you are leaving Meander up as I have just started to read it again. I always keep popping back and reading my favourite chapters, but this time it is re-reading first to last chapters. Like everyone else I will miss you and I am sorry that it has to end. However, I do expect to hear or read somewhere that Monique has written a book! You are a brilliant writer and I am still looking forward to your book so please keep that in mind, I will not be the only one who would like to purchase and read your first book.
I wish everyone in the book club a very Merry Christmas and my best wishes for a very Happy New Year and hope that 2019 turns out well for everyone.

I have a lot to thank you for ….you see, i come from Bosnia and quite frankly, books similar to fsog are not something you can find a lot of in bookstores. So after i read fsog I was so “high ” on it and googled “what to read after fsog”. It was than that i discovered world of FF and Meander. It was one of first stories i read and to this day it’s still my favorite! Than i followed your blog and started reading books you recomend…well those books that i find online because…hello…Bosnia here…
So, in a way bigger than you think, you influenced my life in such a way that i am forever grateful.

Sitting here on a lazy Saturday night and thinking when I can access the new post tomorrow and….then I remember. I won’t have my fix or my outlet about things I don’t exactly discuss in my off-line life.

So perhaps indulge me a few thoughts as a farewell.

It was fascinating to find a community that was (rationally) connected to FSOG through a superb piece of fanfic and then advanced to a clearinghouse for genre books where we could yell our yeas or nays on what’s been published and pick up more than a few good recs. And all along the way discuss the transformative relationship we had with FSOG and then survive 3 excruciating attempts to bring our experience with the book to the screen.

More fascinating (for me) was to watch how the connection to FSOG waned and grayed (again, perhaps a bad pun there) to where it is a sweet, fond memory and a delicious secret to pop back to anyone of the books and read favorite passages.

But even more fascinating, was seeing how FSOG allowed us to segue into an enjoyment of the development of the whole genre of erotic romance, with all the subgenres that could be offered. How Monique weekly led us through her journey through the books, with the ups and downs of reading ecstasy and disappointment. I was introduced to so many new books and stories and ideas. And I will be forever appreciative that I bumped into her work and ultimately her weekly book club. Thankee!!

I want to make a final comment: that I hope that everyone continues searching for books that please them and turn them on. There’s a reason why we read genre, yes, almost addictively. For some, of course, it is a substitute for what they cannot have or are afraid to search for in real life. That’s fair and for many reason, as close as they can come (bad pun?), but nonetheless, please try to achieve in real life what is achievable. Then again, there are only so many self-made billionaires who are good in bed.

But there is another reason I suggest everyone keep on truckin’…I mean, keep on reading genre. For the butterflies in the belly, for the tingling nether regions, for the softening of the sex (all quotations from genre, of course). Because I think reading genre prolongs our physical response into aging. For women, sex is (too much) between the ears. We read it, we feel it…it’s almost the same. And, if, for whatever reason, we cannot have the real thing, or cannot achieve something within the real thing, we will always have Paris, I mean, genre. And it will keep the motor running and keep between the ears running and thus, will keep between the legs running (something weird about that phrase)…and I think will keep us functioning and emotionally younger for a lot longer than our sisters who shut down the machinery both emotionally and physically.

With thanks to everyone. Will miss you all.
    Monique…you rock.

And the next point you made about keeping the flame burning? I second that! In our super busy lives and all the demands that press in from all sides, keeping a spark for the boudoir is essential, and it certainly does start between the ears. I will miss you all right back! 💗

Let me just say that I love, love, love Meander and have thoroughly enjoyed your thoughts and book reviews in the weekly emails. Hi there, Barbi 🤗 Such gratifying words. Thank you for taking the time to let me know. That’s lovely to hear, about the book club and Meander. ❤️
I don’t generally review on Goodreads but I do add my star rating. Anything I give 4 or more stars, as far as I’m concerned, is something I would recommend with ease.
I would really like to get back to Meander for editing, but the story is complete as it stands now.
Sadly I’ve not found other blogs that has the same taste I have in books, but over time I’ve come to trust a few individuals’ reviews on Goodreads. That’s quite handy, as is Goodreads itself. I find it very useful to help me remember what I read and how I liked it at the time. I also love the new month releases email!! ❤️

Two more questions, is your Pinterest page up to date and will you be keeping it up to date? Thanks again!

No worries, Barbi. It irritates me immensely when I go to the effort of emailing someone and they don’t bother to read it, then only answer some questions or answer them poorly. Drives me nuts! 😜
The peeps I follow on Goodreads all go by their own names, so I believe they won’t like me sharing, however, nothing stops you from looking at my Goodreads “friend” list and picking some folks that you see have similar taste, but it would take some effort, going through their reading lists. Sorry. 😔
As for Pinterest, I used to adore the site, went on every day to pin various things, but I haven’t been on in long months. I really dislike the way they’ve strewn it with add pins in your feed. When I first started it was free AND add free, now you can’t go a page down without being bombarded by stuff you DON’T want to see. For a site that’s so specifically taste orientated, I would much prefer to be able to “buy” an add-free version. So I guess my current answer would be no, I won’t be keeping it up to date even though I will keep my account. 😏
